ST. PETERSBURG BEACH – Reporters and editors from The Palm Beach Post won several awards, including top honors, at the 59th Annual Florida Press Club Excellence in Journalism Competition awards banquet.
Staff writer Michael LaForgia won both the Lucy Morgan Award for In-Depth Reporting and the Frances DeVore Award for Public Service for his coverage of the explosive growth of pain management clinics in Palm Beach County, as well as their ownership and operation by former felons. His coverage helped lead to passage of a Florida law that cracks down on alleged pill mills.
LaForgia also won first place in the Class A Public Safety category for various crime stories.
Staff writer Susan Spencer-Wendel won second place in Class A Public Safety for her coverage of Palm Beach County’s criminal courts. She also won first place in the Class A General News category for coverage of criminal courts, including the Dunbar sexual assault case.
Staff writer Cara Fitzpatrick won second place in Class A education reporting.
Staff writer Eliot Kleinberg and copy editor/designer Bruce Moore placed third in the Class A Special Section category for The Post’s Storm 2010 hurricane guide.
The awards were handed out at an awards dinner in St. Petersburg Beach on Oct. 30.
