OFFENSIVE OUTPUT

Dinkin Miller of West Rowan put up some excellent numbers in West Rowan’s third consecutive state championship game. The Falcons beat Eastern Alamance 34-7 in a rematch from last year and Miller rambled for 211 yards in 22 carries in the game at Carter-Finley Stadium. That’s the 10th best individual rushing effort in the over 20 years of NCHSAA neutral site championships/

D’Brian Hudgins of Williamston has the record with 317 yards in 29 carries and four TDs in the 1-A championship in 1999

In the 4-A championship, Georgia Tech recruit Vad Lee of Durham Hillside completed 14 of 25 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns in the Hornets’ 40-0 domination of Davie County at BB&T Field in Winston-Salem. He also rushed for 36 yards in the Hornet victory.

For the season, Lee finished with 3,223 yards passing.

Jahwan Edwards of Matthews David Butler was the Wendy’s Most Valuable Player with 171 yards rushing and three second-half touchdowns in Butler’s 44-0 victory over Wake Forest-Rolesville in the 4-AA championship at Carter-Finley Stadium.

DOMINATING THE BALL

Murphy had a huge edge in time of possession in its game with Wallace-Rose Hill for the 1-A crown, but fell to the big play in a battle of Bulldog teams. Murphy ran 80 offensive plays, second only to the 82 that Belmont South Point ran in its 28-3 victory over South Johnston last year. The time of possession was even more overwhelming, as Murphy held the ball for an amazing 36:08 to 11:52 for Wallace. In fact, Wallace-Rose Hill was held to 297 yards in total offense, and 177 of those yards for Wallace came on just three big plays.

TELEVISION

All eight of the NCHSAA state football championship games are now available on Time Warner Cable systems across the state. Time Warner digital subscribers may go to channel 199 or 1047 to download any of the games for free and watch them at their convenience. The games are available on Carolina On Demand, in the “All New/NCHSAA Championships/Football” section of the Carolina On Demand menus. The NCHSAA volleyball championships from earlier in the fall are also available for viewing along with the NCHSAA invitational cheerleading championships.

The Wake Forest-Rolesville–David Butler game was televised live across the state on Time Warner Cable systems.

EAST/WEST DEADLOCK

The 2010 state championships were evenly split between Eastern and Western champions, with each side earning four titles. The West representative won five of the eight state football championships in 2009, while in 2008 the West team won six of eight. In 2007 it was the East having tremendous success, winning seven of the eight titles. Only Lincolnton, the 2-A West representative, broke through for the Western squads by winning the 2-A title 28-14 over previously undefeated South Columbus in 2007.

SPONSOR

For the sixth year in a row, BB&T served as the title sponsor of the NCHSAA football championship. Every player on each winning team received a special commemorative knit hat and all of the schools in the championships were supplied with championship helmet stickers for the game. Representatives of BB&T were on hand at each title game to assist in the awards ceremonies.

In addition, NCHSAA corporate partner UnderArmour provided the championship teams with commemorative T-shirts.

PERFECT

A total of five football teams out of the entire NCHSAA membership finished the season undefeated: Wallace-Rose Hill, Tarboro, West Rowan, Durham Hillside and Matthews David Butler. West Rowan is working on a 46-game winning streak, reportedly the longest active high school football win streak in the nation.

LONG ONE

Jose Flores of Wallace-Rose Hill booted a 45-yard field goal with 6:57 to play, and that lifted Wallace to an exciting 22-21 victory over Murphy in the 1-A championship at Kenan Stadium. It was just a yard short of the longest field goal kicked in the last 20 years, a 46-yarder by Tedarius Darden of Hobbton against Swain in 1993.

LOTS OF RADIO

A total of 19 different play-by-play originations were done by radio stations at the eight NCHSAA championship games.

ODDS AND ENDS

Austin Stewart of Matthews Butler picked off a pass and returned it 93 yards for a touchdown in Butler’s 44-0 victory over Wake Forest-Rolesville… Markell Howell of Tarboro also had a pick-six in his Vikings’ 21-13 victory over Winston-Salem Carver, returning an interception 36 yards for a TD…a total of 535 media credentials were issued for the championship games at the three sites…Salisbury limited Elizabeth City Northeastern to 1.8 yards per carry on the ground and a total of 203 yards in the Hornets’ 30-0 win…Northern Guilford quarterback Rocco Scarfone was a perfect 10 for 10 through the air in his team’s exciting 21-20 victory over Crest in the 3-AA final…Pender entered the championship game with an amazing four 1,000-yard rushers for the year: Josh Johnson, Shaquille Hooper, Derek Holmes and Javon Powell. But Albemarle held the high-powered Patriot ground game to 166 yards net rushing in its 21-7 win over Pender.
