A child care centre can be a wonderful and fulfilling experience for a young child or it could be just the opposite; a scary place to be while a parent is at work. Any parent placing his or her child in a child care center should have certain expectations. Here are a few common sense suggestions you should consider.
– Topping the list is safety. This covers sharp objects, electrical outlets, maintaining playground equipment, stairways, and if travelling, safety seats.
– Emergencies. A parent should receive immediate notification of any emergency situation involving their child whether it’s a tiny knee scrape or sickness and given the opportunity to pick up the child or not.
– Contact Information. A parent should be the first person notified of any cell or landline phone number and email changes.
– Open Access. Parents should have the ability to visit the child care centre at any time even without advance notice.
– Contact, supervision and assurance that all employees coming in contact with a child are trained and trustworthy and the centre is properly licensed.
– Parents Wishes. All providers should follow parent’s directions in terms of discipline.
- Reports to the parent on a daily or weekly basis is not an unfair expectation.
– Answering questions honestly about their child or the child care center and what they can expect.
– The parent gets what they pay for in terms of policies and procedure.
– Not interfering in the child’s family or personal problems.
– Providers should not make promises they cannot keep or cover up accidents.
– No surprises like a teenage daughter substituting while an employee goes shopping. Surprises are what parents fear most in a child care centre.
