Surprising Bremerton girls have shot at league title

Written by Archer Dacomb on January 17, 2013.

— At the beginning of the girls basketball season, Bremerton was ranked in the bottom half of the Olympic League in the coaches poll.

But surprise, surprise, midway through the season, the Knights are in the running for a league title.

Despite some hard-luck shooting by both teams, Bremerton battled past North Kitsap for a 39-27 win Friday at Les Eathorne gym.

The win improved Bremerton to 10-1 in league (10-5 overall) and keeps the Knights one game behind league-leader Port Angeles, which is 11-0 (11-3 overall) after a 66-36 win over Klahowya.

Knights coach Debbie Lindgren said Bremerton’s biggest obstacle was the six inches between her players’ ears.

“The thing is, we were underdogs for so long and no one believed in us,” Lindgren said. “They don’t know how to play as a team that’s in second place, It’s new. … W

With the weekend in the books, here’s a look at how the country ranks — using the original rankings as the starting point, with the season’s results as rationale for any movement. The top 25 teams land a one-sentence breakdown. The rest? Not so much. Part of the perks of being one of the best. Think your team is too low? Feel another team deserves more credit, less credit? Let’s hear it below. It’s a delicate ranking process, particularly with only two weeks in the books, so you may see one team ranked below a team it just beat see Louisiana-Monroe and Arkansas, for example. Dont be alarmed. Everything will become clearer by the end of the month.

The top 25

1. Alabama (2-0, 0-0)
Are we allowed to say nice things in this space?
2. L.S.U. (2-0, 0-0)
Calmly, slowly and surely, the Tigers tore Washington apart.

Girls Soccer: Courant Blog Ratings

Written by Benjamin Bonython on December 30, 2012.

It’s only the second week for the Courant blog ratings and we already have a new No. 1. And I’m willing to bet anything it won’t be the last time we see the top spot exchanged between the teams in the top two spots. But for now, the No. 1 rating belongs to Westhill. The Vikings, one of six teams with a perfect record, have outscored opponents 25-1 and beat New Canaan and Stamford this victory to grab hold of the top spot (It didn’t hurt either that Glastonbury was handed its first blemish of the season with a 1-1 tie against South Windsor). In the small school ratings, Northwest Catholic tighten its grip on the top spot with victories over Simsbury, RHAM, Hall and Conard in one of the best weeks of the seasons for any program in the state. The top six teams in the ratings also remained the same. For the complete set of ratings, please turn the page.
